The Joseph Rowntee Foundation researched what most influences young people’s drinking behavior. They found out that children who see their parents drunk are more likely to get drunk themselves. This research also found out that 1 in 5 children of the 5700 children they’ve used for their research, has been drunk by the time they were 14. If parents don’t know where their children are on a Saturday night or let them watch films above 18 unsupervised, the chances that these children will have an alcoholic drink is much bigger. The most important thing this research found out is that the habits of parents seem to be particularly powerful.
I think that we should thank the Joseph Rowntee Foundation for doing such a research because now we finally see on paper that it really is true that parents have an important role in the alcohol use of their children. Alcohol maybe tasty and relief you from load but we should never lose our self control, especially not in front of children. These children see you as their hero and want to become just like you. So next time you start to drink keep in mind that your children will want to become as you, this will keep you and the children from drinking too much.
I am surprised to see these results. I myself come from a family with excessive alcohol abuse and I have not ever been any more than slightly tipsy. Through my experience with my father I have grown up to be very aware of the dangers of alcohol. My parents (father in this case) did influence my alcohol use, but not at all in the way described in this article. Maybe it’s a British thing? Nicely written, good going.
